Really Awful Movies: Ep 18 – Basket Case

On this episode of the Really Awful Movies Podcast, Basket Case!

Basket Case is a 1982 American horror-comedy-monster movie written and directed by Frank Henenlotter. It has two sequels, Basket Case 2 (1990) and Basket Case 3: The Progeny (1991), both of which were directed by Henenlotter.

The film is definitely one of our absolute favorites, low budget, off-beat and gory. The film gained an audience in the 1980s due to the proliferation of VHS and has become a bona fide cult classic.

Kevin Van Hentenryck stars as Duane, an average, everyday dude who seeks vengeance for the unwanted surgery that separated him from his deformed conjoined twin brother, who was unceremoniously tossed in the trash.

Belial is left for dead but the grey misshapen lump of flesh is very much alive. Soon, it’s stuffed into a basket carrying case by its protective brother, Duane.

The duo make their way to the mean streets of New York City (42nd street, aka The Deuce) and take up residence in a very sleazy hotel. They then seek vengeance against doctors who performed the surgery and separated the inseparable “twins.”

Really Awful Movies: Ep 17c – The Beyond

The Italian horror classic, The Beyond.

On this week’s podcast, a look at this gore-fest which is set in Louisiana.

“I can feel a presence, someone else is in here!”

Room 36 of a Bayou hotel is where something evil transpired a century ago. Flash forward to a woman who inherits the building and is restoring it to its former glory.

We look at how Fulci loves to focus on the eyes. We discuss where this film places among the Italian director’s work.

The plot is pretty thin gruel, but hey it’s Italian. Who needs plot when you can have Gothic atmosphere to spare and loads and loads of blood??

Really Awful Movies: Ep 17b – The Really Awful Movies Podcast

ram_logoThis is a podcast about our podcast. That’s pretty meta! What’s the Really Awful Movies Podcast all about?

Hosts Chris and Jeff discuss how our site came about and its tagline: “A celebration of low budget cinema.” It’s really a celebration of genre film of all stripes, particularly horror movies, but also musicals, terrible comedies (like Master of Disguise), oddball monster movies, gang/urban blight films, kung fu, post-apocalyptic wasteland movies, hot rod films, ghost movies, you name it.

Also, focal points of discussion: clearing the copyright for the intro segment for the show (we actually did, to the surprise of the film’s distributor, shocked at our honesty) and choices of libations for recording.

Basically, we like to honor films that don’t get the attention we think they deserve. That’s really the mandate of the Really Awful Movies Podcast.
